I was too young to remember anything except that it was there, right next to the railroad. Mind you, i had to call my Aunt for the name. ) My maternal grandparents, Herb and Hazel Carpenter, used to live 2 doors down from Grimm's grocery store on West Armstrong Street. Ronald, your question finally prompted me to register here. I know we all have our "Qwiki Marts" now where we get to know the clerks, sort of, but it just isn't the same. Starts with an S.someone help me out on this one.having a middle age moment.on E Walnut.they had a son named Dave.Īnyway, I was never in a Kroger or a Marsh or even the A&P until I as a teenager. Then we moved to the east end and I was a daily customer of the much larger, but still small grocery next to Hugh's Diner. Try and get that memory from a clerk at Walmart. I don't remember what the doll looked like, but I remember the smile on Larry's face as he handed it to me. Larry made a big show of getting it down from over the coolers and putting it in his basket and riding slowly along as I ran home with my mother. My favorite memory is of a HUGE doll on the top shelf that I had wanted FOREVER (okay, to a 3 year old, 2 days is FOREVER), but I think it was for my birthday. Everything was put in a box and Larry would jump on his bike and meet you at your door with it. As there were only two aisles, you walked down to the meat counter where you looked over the meat, told Orie what piece you wanted and then walked up the other side to Francis who wrote down every thing you had and put the paper under the drawer to be added up later. Good old green coke bottles in a 6 pack that you took back every week. You always walked to the store back then, that is why there were so many small ones, wives just didn't have cars.Īs you walked in (from my small child point of view), there were maybe 6 small shopping carts in front of the Cokes. I have so many memories of this small store and Ora, Francis, Jimmy and Larry. When I was very young, lets say birth to age 3, we lived on Delphi Ave and Hamilton's was where my parents shopped and I do believe it was on W Green. Please call Steve as he is anxious to get as much as he can on this website. I haven't seen any old pictures of that either. Also A&P grocery was where the Eagles Lodge is now. I have thoroughly enjoyed the website and am hoping someone out there has some old photos of these old Mom & Pop groceries.

Their daughter married Jim Jones and they live on the corner of N. My husband, Jim, worked there when he was in school as a sacker, stock boy and whatever else needed to be done. What I wanted to share is I remember Kite's grocery store on N. Incidentally he is doing a fabulous job on this venture. I remember a lot of the little Mom & Pop grocery stores and am hoping someone out there has some pictures to share with Steve. I moved to Frankfort in 1951 shortly after I graduated from Thorntown.
